Inside the contest room, single click on the race in which you want to make a section. 

 Single click on the P for the Primary selection & corresponding A for Alternate selection for the horses you which to select.

Picks are automatically saved when selected, there is no need to confirm or save your selection. Once your pick has been selected, you will see the number displayed to the right of the race information as seen below:
